Liverpool John Lennon Airport Information

Liverpool John Lennon Airport is one of the oldest operational airports in the country. Scheduled flights commenced in 1930. The airport was operated from a converted farmhouse which served as both a terminal and control tower until 1937 when the present control tower was built and a new terminal building was built in 1939.

The airport, which today is a wholly owned subsidery of Peel Holdings P.L.C., was rebranded as Liverpool John Lennon Airport in 2001 as a lasting tribute to the former Beatle that originated from Liverpool. The Airport became the first in the UK to be named after an individual.

In March 2002 Yoko Ono unveiled a 7ft bronze statue of John Lennon by well known local sculptor Tom Murphy. The statue is sited on the main passenger walkway overlooking the check-in hall.
